The “Queen of Tejano Music,” soared to superstardom on local and national levels before she was tragically killed at the age of 23. On stage by the age of six and touring relentlessly throughout her teens on unsteady finances, Selena and her band found huge success within the Latino world in Texas and the Southwest. Pushed as a solo artist in the mainstream pop market by her label, Selena modernized and popularized Tejano music, united divided Latin cultures and broke barriers of Latino male chauvinism. Selena was poised to become a worldwide celebrity before tragedy struck on March 31, 1995, when she was shot in the back and killed by her fan club president, causing widespread and inconsolable grief in the Latino community. Today, her legacy lives on in the 1997 biographical movie Selena the still-thriving CD sales and in the hearts of her millions of adoring fans.
